Guatemala is the northernmost nation of Central America, with its southern border being the Pacific Ocean and its eastern border on the Caribbean Sea. Most of the southern half of the country consists of mountains and plateaus, while the northern half is a lowland tropical area. This nation was part of the great Maya civilization, of which impressive ruins remain throughout the country today.
The great majority of the population lives in major urban centers located in the fertile highland area of the south. The capitol of Guatemala City, once a Maya settlement, serves as one of the industrial centers of Central America.
Among the people of Guatemala, about half are Maya Indian and the remainder are of mixed Indian and European descent, usually referred to as Mestizo.
