Social Security
Parents who obtained a Social Security number for their children who were adopted internationally before those children received documentation of their automatic citizenship should be aware that their children are listed as resident aliens, not U.S. citizens, by the Social Security Administration. The Social Security Administration can only accept a citizenship certificate issued by the INS or a valid U.S. passport issued by the Passport Agency. In order to change the child's status you must return to the Social Security office with proof of citizenship. Once the status is changed the number will remain the same.
